Places to Eat in Östersund, Sweden (Economical & Otherwise)

By: Michala Freeman

Dining in Östersund did not disappoint. Each restaurant offered quality cuisine. Some offered quality AND affordability which we love.

LA FABBRICA DEL GUSTO

Storgatan 28, 831 30 Östersund, Sweden | Hours: 11 AM- 10 PM Daily

We stopped here for an early dinner. They offer counter service; however, it was one of the best meals I had on this trip.

This Italian joint does not hold back. Their extensive menu includes antipasto, pizza, pasta, burgers, salads, risotto, and homemade gelato for dessert.

My friend ordered the Salmone tagliatelle, which was pretty amazing. I ordered the Risotto e scampi. It was ultra-flavorful and delicately balanced.

I kid you not, I wish I could apparate back to this restaurant to try every dish on the menu.

It came out to 350 SEK, around $35, which is not too bad for a nice meal for two people. Our drinks which were a beer and a cider and came out to 160 SEK.

They also offer lunch deals for around 125 SEK.

At lunchtime the following day, we were looking for economical options, and possibly lighter fare.

Saturday: Brunch 12 PM-3 PM Mon-Sat 11 AM-10 PM Sunday 1 PM – 9 PM

We stopped in to Sammurai, an Asian fusion restaurant opposite the Kärnan shopping center. Their lunch buffet was a special treat for two hungry travelers.

This buffet offered cold salad, edamame, chicken curry, vegetable beef, lo mein, white and brown rice, sushi, dessert, coffee and tea, and many other dishes.

Too delicious for words.

Their daily menu looked amazing as well.

125 SEK per person. Wow.

For one final stop in Östersund, I landed at Norra Station Café. I was looking for salad and dessert,  and I got even more than what I bargained for.

Norra Station Café

Restaurang & bar – Norra Station Café (norrastationcafe.se)

Östersundsbolaget AB 559171-0610  Prästgatan 40 831 31 Östersund | Hours: Mon- Thurs 10 AM- 10 PM, Fri 10 AM- 1 AM, Sat 9 AM- 11 PM, Sun Closed. Dinner served 3- 8 pm.

For lunch, I ordered a buckwheat pancake with a salad, called a ‘galleter’. I ordered the ‘Primören’, a creamy shrimp salad on a buckwheat pancake. I will admit, I ordered this not knowing what it was. I panicked. But it was still so good. And I highly recommend the apple soda.

The desserts looked tempting as well.

I had a Ryttarkaka which was a gooey chocolate brownie with coconut (!!)  and a cappuccino.  Sigh. It’s the little things.

220 SEK for an excessive lunch that made my day.

I may have betala-ed a lot in Östersund, but surprisingly not on food. We saved kronor making breakfast and dinner at the hostel.

See my upcoming post about accommodations in Östersund, and activities as well.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and if you ever find yourself in Östersund, let someone else do the cooking for a change.

Cheers!
